Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan was born as the son of Shri Sankaran and Smt. Accamma in Punnapra of Alapuzha District on 20th October 1923. In his more than six decades of political life he has been in the forefront of numerous political movements which aimed at bettering the prospects of Keralites. His is known as "Comrade VS" to his party men.
He entered politics through State Congress in 1939. Disillusioned with the policies and politics of the then Congress he became a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1940. Was imprisoned for five years and six months during the Freedom Struggle period and had to go under-ground for four and half years. He was in the forefront of Punnapra-Vayalar . He was one among the 32 comrades who left the CPI National Council in 1964 to form the CPI(M).
Achuthanandan has served many postitions in long political career. He was the Kerala State Secretary of the CPI(M) between 1980 and 1992 and since 1985 is a member of the Polit Bureau. He has been a member of Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1967, 1970, 1991, 2001 and 2006. He was the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 1992 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006.

Since 1985 he is member of Polit Bureau of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). His life is a tale of struggles and hard work triumphing over Popularly known as "Comrade VS". he
VS had to give up his studies after finishing VII standard.
Now Elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly From Malampuzha Constituency in Palakkad District.
